Multi-sensory Programs

The reading programs employ a multisensory approach and frequently a specialized reading program will be used that employ elements of a number of different programs. Through a systematic process, phonemic awareness and other skills are targeted to provide a foundation for building reading fluency.

A variety of techniques, strategies and styles are used to match the individual needs of each client in areas such as reading, writing, spelling, math, critical thinking, and study strategies.

Assistive Technology

Assistive technology is incorporated into educational therapy sessions as needed. In addition to being used as a remedial tool, assistive technology software and hardware devices are used as compensatory tools, enabling students to work around their respective difficulties while fostering independence.

Students learn about various low tech and high tech solutions. Programs such as the Kurzweil 3000 system provide study skills, editing and file management tools. The system's feature set assists students with reading, comprehension, vocabulary development and the organization of information. Appropriate note taking and outlining skills can also be reinforced using this system.

Sample Devices

The AlphaSmart 3000 is a simple, portable standalone device that enable users to type, edit and store text. It can be used for note-taking and to practice keyboarding without having to be at a computer. Text can be uploaded to a PC or Mac computer or sent directly to a printer.

The Reading Pen II was particularly designed for people with reading or learning disabilities, such as dyslexia. It contains the American Heritage dictionary and assists users by providing a definition of the scanned word or line of text, as well as reading both the words and definition aloud using its textto- speech technology. Words may be spelled out or broken into syllables.
